Maybe you should start a militia.
Suppose that someone from the future could come to you today and warn you that, on one day in 2013, there would be a mass shooting at your workplace, or school, or the store where you buy your groceries, or the mall where you shop. Suppose, further, that they were unable, (to avoid disruption to the time/space continuum), to tell you the exact day, but wanting you to be prepared, they assure you that it is will happen.
What would you do?
The City of Houston Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security has a video with some suggestions. Unfortunately, in the video, all of the people in the workplace are surprised. They have to react to a shooter with the advantages of prior knowledge of what he was going to do, and better weaponry. They have to improvise. They really should have been prepared, instead. Violence in the workplace, shopping malls, fast food restaurants, schools is going to happen. And if you knew it would happen to you next year, what would you do? Are you willing to trust your safety to being able to run, hide, or improvise weapons against a fully armed, determined shooter?
You’d probably buy a gun. And if you live in Southern Illinois, you would contact Heartland Training Team for defensive shooting training. If you live somewhere else, you’d Bing a NRA certified shooting school in your area. And then, if your state isn’t trying to disarm all of it’s citizens and leave them helpless, you’d apply for a concealed carry permit and start carrying that gun around.
Wouldn’t you? Is that good enough?
New International Version (NIV)
9 Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:
10 If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
Why not start a militia?
According to Wikipedia, the word militia is commonly used to refer to a force composed of ordinary citizens to provide defense and emergency law enforcement in times of emergency without being paid a regular salary or committed to a fixed term of service. Legal and historical meanings of militia include: Defense activity or service, to protect a community, its territory, property and laws, and a private, non-governmental force. You and a few friends. You watch their back. They watch yours. And if the Bat Sign is flashed, all converge according to a prearranged and practiced plan.
Of course, first you have to convince your coworkers, and those within your circle of influence to buy guns. Believe it or not, gun ownership is falling. And despite the push for concealed carry by the NRA during the last decade, most permit holders do not regularly carry a gun. If a shooter comes to your work, home, school, or store you will need a militia; and those ordinary citizens will have to be armed with more than a chair and a fire extinguisher.
Time to use that social media. Gather a group of ordinary citizens with whom you have regular contact, at work, on a team, or at school. Buy guns. Get trained. Obtain permits. Carry your gun. Carry. Carry. Carry. Make a plan. Practice your plan. Then when anyone needs help, the rest will come running – and shooting.
