The Price of Freedom is Eternal Vigilance
“Unfortunately, you’ve grown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that’s at the root of all our problems. Some of these same voices also do their best to gum up the works. They’ll warn that tyranny is always lurking just around the corner. You should reject these voices,” Obama said, “because what they suggest is that our brave, and creative, and unique experiment in self-rule is somehow just a sham with which we can’t be trusted.” (See full transcript here.)
Of course, those warning voices were exactly what drove the founding fathers to create a government with built in checks and balances. They listened to those voices, warning of the tyranny. THEY WERE THOSE VOICES!
And they gave us a constitution. A document which contained within itself the mechanism by which it could be amended, and which was created to guard us against the very kind of tyranny which Mr. Obama thinks is no longer possible. Then other voices, which warned of tyranny on the horizon, demanded the inclusion of a bill of rights as a condition of ratification.
Recently, when the Justice Dept secretly collected information on phone calls, made by reporters of the Associated Press News Service, the AP was outraged! “Remember the 1st Amendment!” was their battle cry.
Of course, it is the same media who seem to forget that there are 10 amendments in the Bill of Rights. And it’s the 2nd Amendment which may someday guarantee their 1st Amendment rights, when that tyranny, which voices they ignored warned them of, becomes their new reality. The media will be the first to feel the heavy hand of a tyrannical government. Let’s hope we still have a 2nd Amendment right to keep and bear arms when that day comes. But don’t expect them to appreciate us. Sheepdogs stay alert for the sound of wolves, whether or not the sheep care.
