Keep Calm and Carry
On February 7, 2016, Detroit police arrested a 21 year-old Dearborn, Michigan man – Khalil Abu-Rayyan. His father had contacted the police after discovering his son’s firearms and plans to attack a church. An undercover policeman approached and befriended the would-be jihadist..
Abu-Rayyan said to the undercover cop that he chose a church because “It’s easy and lot’s of people go there. And no one is allowed to carry a gun in church.” He also said that “it’s my dream to behead someone.” And “If I can’t go to the mid-east to do jihad, I’ll do my jihad here.”
On December 2, 2015, 14 people were killed at a workplace, holiday party by Syed Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik. The operation had been planned for months, and was meant to be the first of several shootings.
They were killed by police later that evening.
On July 16, 2015, Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez opened fire on two military installations, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, killing 5 servicemen and injuring 3 others including a policeman.
He was killed in a gun battle with police.
On May 3, 2015, Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi attacked the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, Texas, with automatic rifles. They were avenging the honor of Muhammed, who, they believed was defamed by cartoons on display there as a result of a contest. Fortunately, a sharp-eyed policeman with quick reflexes and a steady hand killed them before they could do much damage.
I could fill this page with similar reports. A full listing of Islamic jihad killings is available on the internet. What are we do do? Try not to offend? Appease? NO. We need to arm ourselves and be prepared to fight back. Keep Calm and Carry. Appeasement is a synonym for surrender. Surrender is a synonym for slavery. If A=B and B=C, then A=C.
We don’t have the luxury of waiting for the police to arrive. Time is on the side of the attackers. After the terrorist attack at the Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi, Kenya which left 72 people dead, Interpol Secretary General Ronald Noble said that armed citizens in open societies need to defend themselves and others against terrorist attacks.
So carry your guns. And be prepared to use them. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, who was fighting a bad guy with guns, we must fight them in the shopping malls, we must fight them in the churches, we must fight them in all private and public places, we must never surrender. If this nation lasts another thousand years, men will still say “the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun”. Keep Calm and Carry.
Postscript: Many will contend that there is a difference between Muslims and Islamic jihadism. Perhaps. But for those Muslims for whom there is a difference, they will need to make the difference clear enough for Ray Charles to spot it. In my moment of decision, I may lose my fine motor skills – I will definitely lose my sense of nuance.
